DARC
Designing the new world: Developing architectural education in response to climate change
AN EU/AUSTRALIA ICI EDUCATION COOPERATION PROGRAM JOINT MOBILITY PROJECT
Partner Institutions:
- School of Architecture and Design, RMIT University, Melbourne (Lead Partner Australia)
- School of Architecture, UTS – University of Technology Sydney
- School of Design, QUT – Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane
- UPC-ETSAB – Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya - Escola Tecnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona, Spain (Lead Partner Europe)
- ENSA – Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Toulouse, Universite’ de Toulouse, France
- II Facolta’ di Architettura, Politecnico di Torino, Italy
The ‘DARC’ Project has commenced in July 2011, and will continue until mid 2014. The 6 schools involved in this project undertake some research and teaching activities framed around one of the most important issues of our time: educating future architects and designers to design in a world adapting to climate change.
The objectives of this project is to provide funded exchanges of Architecture Bachelors and Masters students, and staff, between the EU and Australian partners; to develop the education of architectural students for climate change; and to develop annual workshops which focus upon the program themes. Two workshops are held in Australia and Europe (one in Australia, and one in Europe) each year and will continue to be sustained after the funding period has ended. Around 54 students will be exchanged across the length of the three-year program, and teaching staff will also travel to workshops each year in Australian and European locations. It is envisaged that through the broad and collective involvement and reflection on the pedagogical aspects of the program, the 6 schools involved with this project will frame significant innovations in teaching and learning for architectural and urban issues associated with climate change and urban/architectural sustainability.

6 International Workshops, 2 per year, are an integral and relevant component of this International Program:
1. The ‘DARC’ International Project’s inaugural workshop was hosted by RMIT University, 17-19 October 2011
2. The second workshop took place at UPC-ETSAB Barcelona, 14-18 November 2011
3. The third was organized by UTS Sydney, 20-22 June 2012
4. The fourth took place at ENSA Toulouse, 21-23 November 2012
5. The fifth took place at QUT Brisbane, 11-14 June 2013
6. The last workshop is taking place at Turin Polytechnic 6-8 November 2013
Research developments were discussed through the various workshops, also including discussions and seminars on the different research approaches and associated projects undertaken by the six schools in relation to topics such as ‘climate change’ and ‘urban sustainability among others. In addition to these, the workshops were also informed by presentations of invited external speakers and experts on these topics. Guided tours of historical and contemporary examples of sustainable architecture in the six schools’ cities were also part of the workshops’ activities.
